Barisan names its candidates

TAIPING: A company director, a former assemblyman and an engineer will spearhead Barisan Nasional’s campaign in the three by-elections on April 7.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced Ismail Safian as the candidate for the Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat and Datuk S. Ganesan for the Bukit Selambau state seat yesterday.

In Kuching, the Sarawak Barisan Nasional uninamously agreed to field Malcolm Mussen Lamoh for the Batang Ai state seat.

Najib said Ismail was chosen because he was a local and on the condition that he would not contest the Bukit Gantang Umno division chief’s post.

“The most important thing is that the candidate can work with the division’s leadership to cut down on friction or suspicion,” Najib said at a meet-the-people session here where he announced Ismail’s candidacy.

“We surveyed and shared opinions with other leaders before deciding on him,” he said, adding that the division’s leaders also gave Ismail their full support.

At a separate press conference, Ismail, 48, who is Kampung Kubu Umno branch deputy chairman, said he stood a good chance of wresting the seat from PAS.

“My resolution is to serve the people of Bukit Gantang to the best of my ability,” said Ismail, the human resources director of Solid Waste Management and Public Cleaning Corporation under the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

The Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of its former MP Roslan Shahrum from PAS on Feb 9.

In Sungai Petani, Najib said Ganesan, who is Kedah MIC deputy chairman, was picked to “honour the agreement that has existed between Barisan component parties for over 50 years.”

He said Umno leaders believed that there was no point fighting over a seat if Barisan was not the government in the state.

“What’s important is that we win back the seat so that we can gain back our power in the state,” he said.

The Bukit Selambau seat fell vacant following the resignation of PKR’s assemblyman V. Arumugam.

Ganesan, the former Lunas assemblyman, told reporters that he would work hard to win back the seat for Barisan.

“As I was born here, I believe I will get strong support from the local people. I have a law firm in Sungai Petani where my wife, R. Vatsala manages the practice,” he said.

Ganesan won the Lunas state seat in the 2004 general election but did not contest in the March 8 general election.

Lamoh’s candidacy will be submitted by state Barisan chairman Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for approval.

Mussen, 50, is the sole candidate recommended by Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS). He is an engineer with the state Agriculture Department since 1984. He is expected to resign from the department next week.

PRS president Datuk Dr James Masing said the grassroots had picked Mussen over several others. “I think he is the best candidate to win the by-election,” he told reporters after the state Barisan supreme council meeting yesterday.

The Batang Ai seat fell vacant after the death of Datuk Dublin Unting Ingkot, PRS vice-president and state assistant minister for sports and agriculture, on Feb 24.
